What Gen 2 adds
Gen 2 is where the hub unit becomes a unit: the bearing's outer ring carries an integrated flange, so the whole assembly bolts to the knuckle instead of pressing in. The wheel flange, the bearing and the stud pattern arrive as one part, and replacement is an unbolt-and-refit job.
That integration is the whole point of the generation step from Gen 1. Nothing about the wheel-speed sensing changes at Gen 2 — there is no sensor in the unit — and that absence is the quickest way to recognise the generation on the bench.
Recognising a Gen 2 unit
Look for a bolt-on flange and no sensor, no sensor lead and no tone-ring provision on the unit itself. If the vehicle reads wheel speed from a separate sensor or a ring on the CV joint, the hub unit is Gen 2 territory.
| Point | Gen 1 | Gen 2 | Gen 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitment | Press-in cartridge | Bolt-on flange | Bolt-on flange |
| ABS sensor | None | None in the unit | Integrated in the unit |
Ordering Gen 2 units
Quote the OE number. Gen 2 applications are the ones most often confused with Gen 3, because the vehicles either side of a model change can use either; the sensor check above settles which series page the order belongs to, and inquiries that state 'flanged unit, no sensor' are matched here directly.
Stocking note
Gen 2 units serve the large mid-age parc where bolt-on replacement is standard but hub-integrated sensing is not yet fitted. Factors usually range them beside the Gen 3 series so the counter can settle the generation question from stock.
