The largest family in the catalogue
Wheel hub bearings are the bolt-on units that replaced the press-in cartridge on most modern cars: the bearing, the flange and the wheel studs arrive as one assembly, and the workshop unbolts the old unit and bolts on the new one. With 1,661 listings in the published catalogue, this is the largest family Axlevara ranges, and the one most orders are built from.
The catalogue describes the family by generation, because the generation is what decides whether a unit fits. Each generation adds integration on top of the last, and the additions are not interchangeable: a Gen 2 unit cannot stand in for a Gen 3, even where the flange pattern looks close.
Four generations, four different units
Gen 1 is the cartridge bearing itself, ranged in the wheel bearing family. Gen 2 adds an integrated flange on the outer ring. Gen 3 adds an integrated ABS sensor, so the unit also carries the wheel-speed signal. Gen 4 adds an integrated constant-velocity joint, bringing the driveshaft interface into the unit.
| Generation | What is integrated | Identification point |
|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 | Bearing only (cartridge) | Press-in fit; see the wheel bearing family |
| Gen 2 | Outer-ring flange | Bolt-on flange, no sensor lead |
| Gen 3 | Flange + ABS sensor | Sensor or sensor lead on the unit |
| Gen 4 | Flange, sensor + CV joint | Driveshaft spline through the unit |
How hub units are ordered
Hub units are sold by OE number — the catalogue's own listings run under numbers such as 15874836 and 1J0407613J7P2 — and the OE number already encodes the generation, the flange and the sensor arrangement. Quote the number from the old unit or the parts catalogue and the match is direct; quote only the vehicle and the year and the same car can return two different units.
The trade also orders this family as wheel hub assemblies; the assembly page covers the same units under that wording, scoped to bolt-on replacement content.
Why the ABS sensor decides the order
On Gen 3 units the ABS sensor is part of the bearing unit, so a wrong unit does not just fit badly — it leaves the car without a wheel-speed signal on that corner. Inquiries for Gen 3 applications should state whether the sensor is integral or separate on the vehicle being repaired; the gen-3 series page covers the check in detail.
