What Gen 3 adds
Gen 3 integrates the ABS sensor into the hub unit, on top of the Gen 2 flange. The unit now does two jobs: it carries the wheel, and it produces the wheel-speed signal the ABS and stability systems read. That second job is why the generation cannot be substituted — a Gen 2 unit on a Gen 3 application leaves the car without a signal on that corner.
Identifying a Gen 3 application
The signs are a sensor body or a wired lead on the hub unit itself, and a connector in the harness at the knuckle. Where the lead has been cut or the sensor damaged — a common reason the unit is being replaced — the OE number from the old unit or the parts catalogue is the reliable route, and it is the reference this series is ordered by.
| Check | Gen 3 sign |
|---|---|
| Sensor on the unit | Sensor body or lead present |
| Harness at the knuckle | Connector for the hub sensor |
| If unsure | Quote the OE number; do not guess the generation |
Ordering with the sensor stated
Inquiries for this series should state that the sensor is integral. The statement takes one line and removes the most expensive error in the hub range: the right flange pattern on the wrong generation. The comparison guide's section on bearings versus hub assemblies covers the same ground from the workshop side.
Gen 4 sits beyond this series
Gen 4 adds an integrated constant-velocity joint to the Gen 3 arrangement. It is described on the hub family page; orders for Gen 4 applications are matched from the family listings by OE number.
